Hand-signed Flatbed Giclée on glass limited edition artwork by Richard Rowan.
Celebrating 20 years with Castle Fine Art and marking another significant chapter in Richard Rowan’s artistic journey, the Summer 2026 collection invites viewers into landscapes shaped as much by emotion as by place. While this collection reflects upon two decades of technical innovation and artistic growth, it is equally focused on the future. Rather than a culmination, the artworks represent a continuation of Rowan's lifelong exploration of landscape, light and atmosphere.
In ‘Sonder’, Rowan sought to create a delicate monochrome landscape scene full of depth and emotion. The recurring elements of earth, and sky create a visual language that has become synonymous with Rowan's work.
Working within a restrained palette required extraordinary control. Layers of whites, greys and soft tonal gradations were carefully built and blended to create a sense of space and movement. Drawing inspiration from the natural world while embracing artistic interpretation, the artwork blends a real location with imagined possibilities, resulting in a landscape that feels both familiar and timeless. The vast horizon in the solitary scene unfolds, creating a moment that feels suspended between memory and imagination.
"The work has come a long way. Clouds have been my biggest challenge — my nemesis, really — which is exactly why I keep pushing them. New Life Beckons and The Good in Goodbye really tested me this year."
There is a profound sense of stillness within these works, each artwork inviting us to pause and reconnect with the wonder of the natural world whilst experiencing the emotions that live within it. Yet beneath their tranquillity lies a quiet energy; a tension between light and darkness, clarity and obscurity, permanence and change. As Rowan himself describes it, "Stillness is a moment of perfection. A moment of clarity. A moment of calm in an ever more chaotic world."
Twenty years of artistic development have brought Rowan's reverse oil-on-glass technique to an extraordinary level of refinement. Working in carefully constructed layers, Rowan builds each painting from darkness towards light. Intricate foundations are gradually developed through successive applications of oil paint, with areas blended, refined and selectively revealed to create remarkable depth and luminosity. The unique properties of painting on glass allow colours and highlights to retain an exceptional radiance, producing surfaces that appear to glow from within.
